Peru Elvis Tineo — La Naranja Farm

El Diamante, Jaen, Cajamarca, Peru, 1.00 ha, 1,650 m.a.s.l.

La Naranja is a one-hectare, family-run farm nestled in the highlands of Jaén. Its producer, Elvis Reynerio Tineo Rafael, comes from a long line of coffee growers—knowledge passed from grandparents to parents, and now to him. Established in 2016, the farm was born from a gift: one hectare from his family’s original three. Its name, La Naranja, honours the orange trees interplanted throughout the land.

Sitting at 1,650 metres, the farm cultivates Caturra, Catimor and Catuai. Harvest runs from May to August, yielding around 40 quintales each year. Processing is fully washed and fermented in sealed bags, reflecting the region’s growing push towards quality and controlled experimentation. The surrounding forest and steady rainfall create a cool, humid microclimate; the soils are clay-loam with ideal pH for coffee.

Elvis leads a small team of four, using a combination of organic matter, mineral fertilisers, and recycled coffee by-products to enrich the soil. As with much of Cajamarca, agriculture here relies on rainfall, making the farm vulnerable to climate-related droughts and ongoing threats such as coffee leaf rust. Even so, Elvis remains committed to preserving his family’s legacy and producing coffees that reach well beyond Peru. He hopes that continued improvements in quality will earn roasters’ recognition—and pricing—that support his vision of a truly sustainable farm.

El Diamante is a high-altitude, coffee-driven community in the uplands of Jaén. Regular rains and a humid climate favour varieties like Catimor, Catuai and Geisha, and producers are increasingly focused on raising cup quality each year. Alongside coffee, rice and cacao are common crops. Local life centres around community events, including the patronal festival held annually on 20 July.
